Trading safely

MU has a real economy, and where there is an economy there are people who live off taking from others. Almost no scam here is sophisticated: it is the same five, repeated for twenty years, and all of them depend on you being in a hurry.

First: lock the inventory

/lock <password>

That locks the inventory: no item can be moved, dropped, sold or traded until you unlock it with /unlock <password>.

Turn this on today, as soon as you have something that would hurt to lose. It is the only real protection against someone getting into your account — and against you yourself dragging the wrong thing at three in the morning.

The two ways to trade

Direct trade

Both open the window, each one puts in what they are going to give, both confirm.

The window shows exactly what is going out and what is coming in. Read it before confirming. There is no undo.

Personal shop

You set up the shop, put a price on it, and whoever walks by buys. No conversation, no trust needed.

  • /store opens the shop.
  • /offstore opens the shop and leaves it selling after you log out of the game.

The shop is always safer than the direct trade, because there is no step where someone swaps one thing for another in front of you.

The scams that repeat

The item swap at confirmation time. The person puts in the right item, you confirm, they take it out and put in a similar low-level one. Always check the window after the last change, not before.

"Lend it to me and I will give it back." They do not. There is no lending in MU — what leaves your inventory has left.

"I am a GM, I need your password to fix your item." The team never asks for a password, and does not need to: whoever has server access does not need your account.

"Send the item first and I will send the zen." If the person does not accept the trade window, which exists exactly for this, it is because they do not intend to keep their side.

The fake site. There is only one site: wildmu.com. Any other address asking for your login is a scam, however similar it looks.

What nobody can do to you

Worth knowing so you do not fall for an invented threat:

  • Nobody steals your item by killing you. The system that would do that is off on this server. You can die a thousand times and never lose what you are wearing.
  • Nobody takes an item from your warehouse. The warehouse belongs to the account, and does not open from outside.
  • Nobody "hacks" your character. What exists is people finding out passwords — and that is why the game password should not be the same as anything else.

Your password

The game password is 10 characters max — a limit of the MU database, not a choice of ours. Since it is short, it is weak by nature:

  • Do not repeat the email password or the site password anywhere.
  • If you suspect someone saw it, change it right away, at wildmu.com.
  • Every password change is logged, with date and origin. If something happens, the team can see what went on.

If it happens to you

Open a ticket at wildmu.com/support with the date, approximate time, name of the character involved and what was agreed.

The server logs trade, command, item that dropped and login. The more precise the time, the easier it is to find — and a good part of what is lost to a scam is recoverable when the report arrives early.
