Jewels

What a jewel is

In MU, a jewel is a small item you never wear or use — it exists only to be spent. You take it to an NPC, it disappears, and your gear gets better in return.

That is why jewels work as currency: zen you earn killing anything, by the thousand, and it does not buy what matters. A jewel is rare, and it is what separates an ordinary item from a good one.

There are eight. You will spend most of your time chasing three of them.

Jewel What it does Where it comes from
Jewel of Bless raises an item from +0 to +6 drops while hunting
Jewel of Soul raises an item from +7 to +9 drops while hunting
Jewel of Chaos the base of nearly every Chaos Machine recipe drops while hunting
Jewel of Life adds an extra option to an item drops while hunting
Jewel of Creation ingredient of the expensive recipes drops while hunting
Gemstone turns into Jewel of Harmony Kanturu 3 only
Jewel of Guardian ingredient of the 380 item never drops — events only
Jewel of Harmony special option on an item never drops — events only

How they drop: the exact numbers

Five jewels drop from ordinary monsters, on any map. No event, no special place — only a monster of a high enough level.

The chance is 0.1% per monster killed, that is one in a thousand on average. It is the same on all three rates.

Jewel Monster level Chance Where
Jewel of Chaos 12 to 150 0.1% any map
Jewel of Bless 25 to 150 0.1% any map
Jewel of Soul 25 to 150 0.1% any map
Jewel of Life 46 to 150 0.1% any map
Jewel of Creation 46 to 150 0.1% any map
Gemstone 69 to 150 0.1% Kanturu 3 only

Reading the table: killing a level 30 monster can give Chaos, Bless or Soul — but never Life or Creation, which need level 46. A level 10 monster gives no jewel at all. Above 150 the roll does not run either.

Since these are five independent rolls, hunting a monster of level 46 or higher you get some jewel roughly every 200 kills.

The two that never drop

Jewel of Guardian and Jewel of Harmony have no line at all in the drop table. No monster on the server drops them, on any map, at any level. They come only from event reward bags.

That is deliberate, and it is what makes them expensive: they are the bottleneck of the 380 item and of the Harmony option.

What each one is for

Bless and Soul — raising an item

Every piece of gear carries a number after its name: Dragon Armor +5. The higher it is, the more defence or damage it gives. It starts at +0 and you raise it with jewels at the Chaos Machine.

  • Bless takes it from +0 to +6
  • Soul takes it from +7 to +9

On this server the two never fail from +0 to +6. From +7 up there is risk — see the Chaos Machine article.

Life — the extra option

The extra option is a bonus shown as a second number: +16 damage on a weapon, + life recovery on armour. Jewel of Life adds or raises that option, and it can fail and lower the item.

Chaos — the base of everything

Nearly every Chaos Machine recipe asks for at least one Jewel of Chaos. Wings, Dinorant, the 380 item, socket seeds, event tickets: all of it goes through it. This is the jewel you will spend most.

Creation — the expensive recipes

Ingredient of the top recipes: second and third level wings, socket seed, Seed Sphere. It drops at the same rate as Life, from monster level 46 up.

Gemstone and Harmony — the separate path

Gemstone only drops in Kanturu 3, and on its own it does nothing. You take it to the NPC and it becomes Jewel of Harmony, which gives an item a special option no other path offers.

Guardian — the 380 item

A 380 item is gear with a level requirement of 380, far above normal, and with an option of its own. Jewel of Guardian is one of the ingredients.
