Where each item drops

It is the question everyone asks and almost nobody can answer: "where does the Dragon Armor drop?"

The answer surprises people coming from other games: there is no item list per monster. No creature in MU has its own equipment loot table. What exists is a level rule — and once you understand it, you can work out where anything drops on your own.

The rule

Every item has a level (it is on its page in the catalogue). That level decides who drops it:

An item of level L drops from monsters of level L−2 to L+4.

That is all. Dragon Armor is level 59, so it drops from monsters of level 57 to 63 — and from no others. The map does not matter, rarity does not matter: the monster's level matters.

One example, step by step

You want a Dragon Armor (level 59).

  1. The window is 57 to 63.
  2. Which monsters are in it? Death Cow (57), Necron (58), Devil (60), Chief Skeleton Archer (61), Aegis (62), Death Knight (62), Death Centurion (63)…
  3. Where do they live? Lost Tower, Kalima 3 and Kalima 4.

There it is: to farm Dragon Armor, you go to Lost Tower.

The mistake that wastes a lot of time

Hunting far above does not raise the chance — it zeroes it.

This is the opposite of what intuition says. If you are level 200 and go beat on level 120 monsters thinking "strong monsters drop good items", level 59 items are simply not on that monster's list. It will never drop a Dragon Armor, not once in a thousand hours.

Want a specific item? Hunt at its level.

The rule backwards

If you are looking at a monster instead of an item, the same rule becomes:

A monster of level N drops items of level N−4 to N+2.

A Bull Fighter, level 6, drops items of level 2 to 8 — Kris, Short Sword, Leather, Pad, Vine. That is why town-edge monsters only leave junk: it is not bad luck, it is their window.

For EXCELLENT, the maths change

Excellent items do not follow the same window. When the game rolls an excellent, it subtracts 25 levels before picking the item. In practice:

The excellent version of a level L item comes from monsters of level L+23 to L+29.

That is: about 25 levels above. It is why nobody finds good excellents hunting at their own level — and why the high maps are worth it even when the ordinary equipment they drop is useless to you.

Two locks come with it:

  • Monsters level 25 and below never drop excellent. In Lorencia and Noria no monster reaches that, so excellent does not drop on those two maps, no matter how long you hunt.
  • Wings, jewels and scrolls are excluded from the excellent roll.

The three things that escape the rule

Not everything goes through that window. Three doors ignore the item's level:

Door What it is How it works
Boss bag Kundun, Selupan, Medusa, Erohim, the golden monsters Each has its own list. And it replaces everything: a boss with a bag never drops ordinary equipment
Its own table jewels, scrolls, wing materials, Moonstone Works by monster level range and sometimes on one map only (see jewels)
Ancient ancient set items A separate roll, only in Land of Trials

Socketed items have one more lock: they obey the level window, but only drop on maps where sockets are enabled — see socket and harmony.

Where to look it up without doing maths

You do not have to memorise any of this. In the site catalogue:

  • every item page has a "Where it drops" block, with the level window, the monster list and the maps;
  • every monster page has "What it drops", with everything that comes off it.

Both lists are computed with the same rule the server uses. It is not an estimate and not a copy from another server: it comes from the file our own GameServer reads.
