Halvard the smith has arrived in Lorencia
A new smith who works on the excellent options of your gear: make it excellent, remove, swap or add an option. And the Fragment of Excellence now drops from bosses.
Until today, an excellent piece was whatever luck had handed you. You killed, looked at the options, and kept them — or threw the piece away and started over.
Halvard has opened his forge in Lorencia, and he works on exactly that.
The four operations
Bring him a piece and choose what to do.
| operation | what it does | base cost |
|---|---|---|
| Make excellent | a plain piece gains its first option | 30 fragments + 1,000,000 zen |
| Remove | takes out an option you do not want | 30 to 255 fragments |
| Swap | trades one option for another | twice the cost of removing |
| Add | puts one more option on the piece | 60 to 960 fragments |
Making a piece excellent only works on a piece with zero options, and fails 25% of the time. Removing and swapping never fail.
Swapping costs twice as much as removing because it is where you hold the most control: you choose which option leaves.
The option that comes in is always rolled
This is the heart of the machine, and it is worth understanding before you spend.
You choose which option leaves. Which option arrives is luck — in all four operations, without exception.
To nudge fate, put a jewel in the machine to aim at the option you want. That doubles the price of the operation.
| option | jewel that aims it |
|---|---|
| 1st | Jewel of Soul |
| 2nd | Jewel of Life |
| 3rd | Jewel of Creation |
| 4th | Jewel of Bless |
| 5th | Jewel of Guardian |
| 6th | Jewel of Harmony |
It is these six because they are the ones that stack up to 255 in the inventory. The Jewel of Chaos was left out precisely because it does not stack: five of them would take five bag slots for a single operation.
Failing never destroys the piece
That is a house rule, not an exception.
When an operation fails, you lose the cost and nothing else. The piece comes back to your hand exactly as it was — same options, same level, same everything.
There is no operation in this forge that breaks, degrades or erases your item.
Adding is the step that climbs
The other three operations have a stable price. Adding is different: each new option costs twice the last one and lands less often.
| option you want | cost | chance | expected cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2nd | 60 fragments | 70% | ~86 |
| 3rd | 120 fragments | 60% | ~200 |
| 4th | 240 fragments | 50% | ~480 |
| 5th | 480 fragments | 40% | ~1,200 |
| 6th | 960 fragments | 30% | ~3,200 |
From one option to all six is roughly 5,200 expected fragments — and more than half of that sits in the last step alone.
That is deliberate, for two reasons.
The second option is cheap because whoever just made a piece excellent deserves to feel the progress the same day. It is the invitation.
The sixth is a project because a six-option piece has to keep being worth what it is worth. If it came out on a Tuesday night, the item somebody built over weeks would become a commodity.
Doubling the price alone would separate nothing — whoever has twice the fragments buys twice as much. Lowering the chance alone would just be grinding. It is the two together that make the decision weigh.
Wings and rings cost more
They are the top of the economy and today they come out of the Chaos Machine, expensive and with risk. Without a multiplier, they would leave the forge for the price of a glove.
| piece | multiplier |
|---|---|
| Weapon | 1x |
| Ring | 2x |
| Wings | 3x |
Fenrir and Dinorant the forge will not take
And not because of price. The Horn of Fenrir and the Horn of Dinorant do not have options that add up. What looks like a list of options is, on them, the number of the variant — 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16, one at a time. That number is what makes a Fenrir +Illusion, or golden.
Adding an option to an +Illusion Fenrir would produce a number that is not in the table. The item would lose its name and the four attributes of its variant — paid for, and with no undo.
So Halvard turns both away, with the reason written on screen.
The Fragment of Excellence now drops from bosses
Fragments used to come only from boxes. Now Kundun, Medusa, Selupan and Erohim drop 5 to 10 on every kill — and the other bosses drop fewer, with a chance.
And it is an extra drop: it does not replace and does not take away anything they already gave. What dropped before still drops.
| boss | chance | amount |
|---|---|---|
| Kundun | always | 5 to 10 |
| Medusa | always | 5 to 10 |
| Selupan | always | 5 to 10 |
| Erohim | always | 5 to 10 |
| Dark Elf | 50% | 3 to 6 |
| Nightmare | 50% | 3 to 6 |
| Balgass | 50% | 3 to 6 |
| Maya (each hand) | 40% | 2 to 4 |
| Red Dragon | 30% | 2 to 4 |
| Fire Flame Ghost | 20% | 1 to 3 |
| Phoenix of Darkness | 20% | 1 to 3 |
And in the events
Illusion Temple and Imperial Guardian now give fragments, the way Blood Castle and Chaos Castle already did.
And the golden Fenrir is now 60 times more likely in the Illusion Temple, for whoever wins: the chance went from 5 to 300 in 10,000.
